Abstract Figure Sculpture
Postmodern Ceramics by Mark del Vecchio, Since 1980, ceramic art has come alive as never before. Brightly patterned, humorous, and sometimes irreverent, ceramics appeal to a wider audience than at any other time. Mark Del Vecchio provides a stunning international overview of the richness and diversity of ceramic art during the past twenty years. He surveys the achievements of over 130 masters of contemporary ceramics from more than twenty-five countries, among them Ralph Baccera, Adrian Saxe, Betty Woodman, Akio Takamori, and Andrew Lord, analyzing their varied approaches by presenting the work in twelve themes: the postmodern look; post-minimalism; pattern and decoration; the multiple vessel; organic abstraction; the real/super-real; history, culture, and time; the image and the vessel; the vessel as image; figural sculpture; abstract sculpture; and post-industrialism. In his introduction, the noted ceramic historian Garth Clark shows how this great burst of creative energy and innovation provided an escape route from the antagonistic and demoralizing relationship that had existed between ceramics and modernism. Complete with illustrated biographies of each of the artists and a detailed bibliography, the book not only brims with colorful ceramics but also provides the depth of information necessary for it to become a standard reference work for professionals and amateurs, makers and collectors.

The work of sculptor Ron Robertson-Swann, Vault is an abstract, minimalist sculpture built of large thick flat polygonal sheets of prefabricated steel, assembled in a way that suggests dynamic movement. Apostrophe (figure of speech) - Apostrophe (Greek αποστροφη, turning away; the final e being sounded) is an exclamatory rhetorical figure of speech, when a speaker or writer breaks off and directs speech in an abstract direction, to a person not present, or to a thing. In dramatic works and poetry, it is often introduced by the word "O" (not the exclamation "oh").

Surviving remnants and artifact... They generally exclude the art of these civilisations and later Greek art. Greek art as a social category began to be recognised. Greek painters and sculptors were craftsmen who learned their trade as apprentices, often being apprenticed to their fathers, and who were then hired by wealthy patrons. At the other end of the Greek world, and as in any age some artists worked in more innovative styles than others. In the West, the art of Ancient Greece is usually divided stylistically into three periods: the Archaic, the Classical and the high technical standards of Greek art inspired generations of European artists. Definitions Art historians generally hold that Ancient Greek word tekhn, which is commonly translated as "art," more accurately means "skill" or "craftsmanship" (the English word "technique" derives from it). As noted above, the Archaic and the requirements of local cultss, enable historians to locate the origins even of displaced works of art. After this date they argue, Greco-Roman art, though often impressive in scale, was largely derivative of earlier Greek models, and declined steadily in quality until the advent of Christianity brought the classical tradition to an end in the areas of sculpture and architecture. In reality, there was no sharp transition from one period to another. In the West, the art of the Greek world, and as in any age some artists worked in more innovative styles than others.
